Gemütlichkeit is a German word that can be a bit difficult to translate. It is often described as a feeling of friendliness, comfort and coziness and we recently got to experience this right here in Jozi.
On May 24, 2014, the German International School in Joburg held its 107th annual Schulbasar (School basar) and we were lucky to be invited to tag along with some German friends of ours.

The Schulbasar is a family-oriented festival with games and activities for the kids and lots of beer for the adults.

We were fortunate to have a lovely, sunny autumn day for this event and we pretty much settled into a table in the beer garden to chat with our friends and sample some tasty brew for the entire afternoon. And of course, we also sampled some of the fine German cuisine which our friends declared as close to authentic.
Weissbier, my favorite

Eisbein (ham hocks)
Potato Pancakes. I skipped the traditional applesauce in favor of South African chutney as I am not a big fan of applesauce. I got some strange looks but it was quite tasty.
It looked like this guy was setting up a meth lab but it was only a Hubbly Bubbly (South African Hookah pipe).
Jägermeister Truck. Believe it or not we stuck to the beer.
The Schulbasar is open to the public so be sure not to miss this next year.
Do you have any other fun international festivals coming to Jozi to recommend ? Let me know more about them.
