About

I’m Kelly and I moved to Johannesburg, South Africa at the end of October 2013 with my life partner Yannick. I am American however before moving to South Africa I had been living and working in France (Paris and Nice) since the year 2000. Yannick (he’s French) had been traveling to Cape Town for his job since 2010 and consequently we had been able to take several holidays to South Africa and soon discovered this was a place we would like to call home someday. When I was offered a job for the company I had been consulting for back in Nice to move to Joburg (we had never even visited the city before) we jumped on the opportunity and haven’t looked back since.

I started this blog to share our adventures as we discover our new city, country and continent. Our passions include travel (especially camping and 4x4ing), photography, the great outdoors for activites such as safari and hiking as well as partaking in devouring good food (I’m a vegetarian and Yannick is very much a carnivore) and wine.

We are living our new life to the max here in South Africa and I hope you enjoy a peek into the place we now call home.

    • Thanks so much for sharing my posts and I am happy you enjoy the blog. I was so glad to have found yours before we moved, after hearing way too many negative things about Joburg your posts really made me feel like I already knew how much I was going to love it here and I do ! I am in the process of getting setup on Twitter with the name UnderAnAfricanSun, hopefully I can get it sorted soon. Thanks again for all the shares, I really appreciate it.

  2. I absolutely love your blog! Makes me miss Africa a lot!!! I wish I could just move down there and work a job that allows me to go hiking and exploring the wild, like a did before. Now I gotta wait 10+ years, but hey at least I can spend my vacations there…
    Keep your posts coming! 🙂

  4. What? A vegetarian in South Africa?! I lived there for a while and know about their love for braais and all things meat 🙂 On a serious note though, South Africa is a beautiful country with so many sights and sounds to enjoy. I look forward to reading more of your adventures.

    • Hello,

Unfortunately I do not have any direct experience with any places but please avoid any place that involves contact with the cats (most are raised for canned hunting). I have visited Lions Rock and spoke with a volunteer there and it is an excellent place, you may want to check it out. There is also a facebook group “Volunteers in Africa Beware” that has a lot of good information about volunteering. Thanks for reading, hope that helps a bit.

  6. I don’t know why it took me so long, but I just found your blog! I’m a Canadian who moved to Pretoria in Sept 2016, and 11 months in, I’m still loving it! I especially like your posts about Kruger- it’s my favourite place on the planet by a long shot!
